What is NFC technology?

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short-range wireless technology that enables the communication between devices over a distance of a few centimeters.

NFC operates at 13.56 MHz and supports the existing ISO/IEC standards 14443 (Types A/B/Felica). An NFC device can work in two modes: active (battery powered) and passive (radio energy powered).

  • Card emulation: the NFC device behaves exactly like a contactless card and can be used in transport fare payment systems such as Mifare or Calypso as well as contactless payment such as Visa Wave, MasterCard PayPass, JCB J-speedy or American Express ExpressPay
  • Reader mode: the NFC device is active and reads a passive NFC tag; for example reading and storing a web address or coupon from a poster for interactive advertising
  • Peer-to-peer (P2P) mode: two NFC devices communicate with each other exchanging information.

Single-Wire-Protocol is the protocol that defines the interface between the Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC, or SIM card) and the embedded NFC chipset within the handset. This protocol, which has been invented by Gemalto, has been standardized at the ETSI.

Global Platform is an independent and not-for-profit organization that combines the interests of smart card issuers, vendors, industry groups, public entities, and technology suppliers to define requirements for an open and interoperable infrastructure for smart cards, devices and systems.

Global Platform version 2.2 defines specific requirements (i.e. Application selection, Confidential Card Content Management, UICC configuration) for mobile NFC deployments. http://www.globalplatform.org/

  • It is a standardized (OMA-TS-SCWS-V1_0-20060703-D) SIM based web server enable to browse SIM stored multimedia content (i.e. HTML, GIF, JPEG; MPEG) through mobile WAP browser.
  • SCWS is a Web server running in the SIM card ((U)SIM, R-UIM, CSIM) that can be used to implement services and is portable across handsets.
  • The NFC device is active and reads a passive NFC tag; for example reading and storing a web address or coupon from a poster for interactive advertising
  • In terms of user benefits, the Web browser is easily accessible from any phone’s user interface, and the SCWS is accessible at all times including out-of-coverage scenarios.
  • For NFC applications, the SCWS technology is an excellent platform to develop the “Graphical User Interface” of NFC services.
  • The SCWS technology is an OMA standard.
