LTE
(Long Term Evolution), 4G mobile broadband generation, is an evolution of the
current 3G wireless network standard, designed to support high speed multimedia
and data applications (including VoIP) and provide users with services and
applications that seamlessly span wireless and wired networks. They can be
accessed any time using a range of their connected devices with an experience
comparable to the one of fixed broadband networks.
The benefits brought by LTE are combined to give higher bandwidth enabling faster access to content and applications, as well as a low latency and permanent IP connectivity LTE is becoming the 4G standard in all markets and today 39 operators in 19 countries are getting ready for this development (GSA data).
The role of Gemalto in the LTE arena is to help its customers deploy new value added services taking advantage of LTE speed and IP connectivity. Gemalto won OTA or UICC solutions major LTE projects, such as Verizon Wireless in the US paving the way for the development of new generation device provisioning platforms.
LTE experience will be first accessible using data only devices such as USB or embedded PC modems. Mobile internet devices, smart phones and communicating consumer electronics devices will appear at a later stage, leading to an exciting era of connectivity for consumers and new opportunities for mobile operators and handset manufacturers.
Gemalto is also part of the ng Connect program trying to foster collaboration between infrastructure, device, application and content companies.
ng Connect initiative comes from the acknowledgement that no single company
has the resources needed to develop and promote on its own all those new
services brought by this new connectivity.
ng Connect, covering from primary research to collaborative sales and marketing,
aims at creating a strong ecosystem between innovative companies, in order to be
able to deliver the applications that will shape tomorrow’s market.
The role of the UICC is now extended to secure access to LTE networks. Thanks to the constant IP connectivity offered by LTE, the UICC has now turned into a modern, IP connected multi applicative platform, capable of exposing cryptographic services directly accessible from IP networks. In this new role the UICC will be able to secure not only applications executed from the LTE device, but also those accessed throughout the range of the user connected appliances.
