Sealys Security features

The increase in international travel, growing threats from terrorism, high levels of identity fraud as well as illegal immigration means that our travel documents, ID and healthcare documents must be highly secure.

At Gemalto we take these threats seriously by ensuring that the secure document selected can be trusted, by using technologies and materials that are difficult to copy, use and come by.

Not only should security features be secure and innovative, but also the whole process from enrolment to production, personalization and delivery must be safe and secure.

Security features can be overt and covert, visible and invisible.

Gemalto considers 4 important levels of security for secure documents. The first level features recognizable by human senses – sight and touch - are the most important. A secure document should be designed with a consistent set of security features with a maximum of strong level-one features.

Beyond this, level 2 features can be seen using simple equipment such as a UV lamp or a magnifying glass to view the microtext, level 3 features requires specific, sophisticated equipment whilst level 4 features requires special laboratory materials to analyze hidden tracers.

Traditional high security features available for all Sealys documents include guilloches background printing, rainbow printing, intaglio printing, invisible fluorescent printing or mixed into visible ink, micro-printing, UV rainbow printing, OVIs and modified fonts just to name a few.

At Gemalto we recommend 100% polycarbonate datapages or cards, tamperproof solid card bodies that are impossible to delaminate and that enable the deployment of some very unique security features such as Sealys Window, Changeable and multiple laser image and positive and negative embossing.

On top of this, the polycarbonate material enables secure laser engraving personalization such as Sealys Laser Sealer. Color photo personalization is also an option on all secure documents or polycarbonate cards.

Sealys CoreMark is a semi-transparent window within the polycarbonate card body. Using laser engraving techniques, it enables deeper markings into the core of the card and provides a watermark effect. This makes checking the document as natural as verifying a banknote.

A strong visible security feature is the Sealys Window - a transparent window created inside the card making it impossible to copy and enabling quick checking, like watermarks on banknotes. Laser engraving and several optical elements can also be combined within the window. Any attempts by forgers to tamper with the document will be immediately visible.

The Sealys Changeable laser image or mirror CLI/MLI is an easy to check visible security features trusted by border control authorities. Gemalto has the best quality of CLI/MLI quality and expertise on the market.

Due to the unique manufacturing process, Gemalto finds itself the leading supplier to offer both positive and negative embossing. Micro lettering can also be both negative/positive both options making the forging more difficult.

Unique in the market, Sealys Edge Sealer is a laser engraving process applied during the personalization stage. Documents are laser-etched with markings along the edge of the document, thus adding an additional layer of security. The laser engravings ideally relate to the holder’s personal information, using their name, serial number, or other unique information.

Making forgery even more difficult, the Sealys Laser Sealer insures that criminals can’t change or add laser engraved information after personalization has taken place. The laser engraved image, signature or data is digitally manipulated to include slightly visible security marking. Post-lasering will be revealed by visible marks in the document.

Sealys secure documents have the highest electronic level of security with Sealys operating systems for electronic passports and other electronic identity documents, further enhancing the security of the document itself.

As you will see in our web site, Gemalto has a wide variety of innovative security features that are available. These features are customizable according to your needs.

Gemalto is proud to work with more than 50 technologically proactive governments and agencies worldwide, and to have by far the greatest number of references in the identity document industry.
